Poznań sits on the Warta River in western Poland with roughly 530,000 residents. Its Cathedral Island, dating to 968, holds the tomb of Mieszko I, Poland's first historical ruler. On the Old Market Square, the 1550 Town Hall draws crowds at noon when mechanical goats butt heads above the clock. The city also sparked the 1919 Wielkopolska Uprising, the only Polish uprising to achieve its goals, while the 2006 Stary Browar shopping-and-art centre occupies a converted 1844 brewery.
