Newcastle upon Tyne sits on the River Tyne in northeast England with roughly 310,000 residents, taking its name from the Roman Pons Aelius bridge built there in 122 AD. The Newcastle Castle Keep, completed in 1248, ranks among the finest surviving Norman keeps in Britain. Seven bridges span the Tyne, including the 1928 Tyne Bridge that served as the prototype for the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The city built George Stephenson's 1814 Blücher locomotive, opened the world's first covered railway station at Central Station in 1786, and houses the UK's oldest indoor market at the Grade I-listed Grainger Market since 1838.
