Kaufbeuren, Germany

Kaufbeuren is a town of about 44,000 residents on the Wertach river in Swabia, Bavaria, founded in 1190 and a Free Imperial City until 1803. Its skyline is marked by the Fünfknopfturm, a 1420 five-pointed crescent gate that at 60.5 metres is the highest medieval tower in the region. Saint Martin's Church, consecrated in 1411, holds a 1497 carved altar by sculptor Jörg Lederer, while the 1508 Crescent Convent was home to the beatified mystic Maria Crescentia Höss, who lived there from 1682 to 1744. The 1934 Kunstmuseum rounds out the visit with a collection of regional Expressionist works.
