Overview
We are in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. With a population of about 275,000 people it also sees tourists visiting. The city’s name is believed to derive from the Turkish word "saray," meaning palace, reflecting its Ottoman past.

We have recorded a few tours in the city already ( Search: 'Sarajevo' ). Sarajevo is nestled in a valley surrounded by the Dinaric Alps. We start our tour at one of the view points this time overlooking the city. Soon we walk downhill and can experience the blend of Eastern and Western influences.

Founded in the 15th century by the Ottomans, Sarajevo quickly became a key cultural and trade hub in the Balkans. Sarajevo is perhaps most famous for the event that sparked World War I. In 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated here, an event that set off a chain reaction leading to war. The exact spot of the assassination is marked by a small plaque near the Latin Bridge.

We will see Sarajevo's old town, Baščaršija. It dates back to the 15th century. We pass the Sebilj, which is an Ottoman-style wooden fountain (sebil) in the centre of Baščaršija Square.

There in the old town are many narrow streets, traditional shops, and historic buildings. One of the most notable is the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, built in 1530, which remains a significant religious and cultural center. Sarajevo is one of the few cities in Europe where a mosque, Catholic church, Orthodox church and a synagogue are located within the same neighborhood.

In more recent history, Sarajevo hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics, a major achievement for the city and former Yugoslavia. Just a few years later, Sarajevo endured the longest siege of a capital city in modern warfare, from 1992 to 1996, during the Bosnian War.

On our tour we will see much of the city center and even some park before we return to the wooden fountain "sebilj".

A fun fact at last: Sarajevo was the first city in Europe and the second in the world (after San Francisco) to have a full-time electric tram network, starting in 1885.
