Salisbury sits in southern England where the Avon, Nadder, Ebble, and Wiley rivers meet, with about 43,000 residents. Salisbury Cathedral, built between 1220 and 1320, rises to a 123-metre spire that remains the tallest in the United Kingdom and shelters the world's oldest working mechanical clock, dating from 1386. Its Chapter House preserves the best-preserved of the four surviving Magna Carta originals from 1215, while the surrounding medieval core forms the largest close in Britain. Thirteen kilometres north stands Stonehenge, the most famous Stone Age monument in Europe, raised around 2500 BC near the original 1069 fortification at Old Sarum, which was abandoned for the new town below.
