Glasgow sits on the River Clyde in west-central Scotland with roughly 635,000 residents, making it the largest city in the country. It grew from a 6th-century settlement around Saint Mungo's cathedral, which was established near the present site in 543. The University of Glasgow, founded in 1451, educated Adam Smith and Lord Kelvin, while the Hunterian Museum of 1796 ranks as Scotland's oldest public museum.
