Marmaris, Turkey

Marmaris is a town of roughly 95,000 residents on the Turkish Riviera whose population swells to about 400,000 during the summer months. It sits in a natural harbour sheltered by the 12 km-long Nir Fortress peninsula, with the 1989 Netsel Marina offering 720 berths. The 1522 Marmaris Castle, rebuilt by Suleiman the Magnificent for his Rhodes campaign, holds 18 rooms of exhibits. Offshore lies the 1812 wreck of HMS Salsette, which sank carrying Robert Fulton's torpedoes. Thirteen kilometres south, the 1988 Iztuzu Beach records around 300 loggerhead turtle nests each year.
