Fethiye, Turkey

Fethiye sits on the Turquoise Coast of southwest Turkey, home to roughly 180,000 residents and built directly atop the ancient Lycian city of Telmessos. The 4th-century BC Amyntas Rock Tomb, carved with Ionic temple façades into a 30-metre cliff face, overlooks the modern town, which the 1958 earthquake largely rebuilt. Fourteen kilometres south, the sheltered Ölüdeniz lagoon draws heavy crowds, while the 540-kilometre Lycian Way trail, opened in 1999, sets out from the area toward Antalya. Nearby Butterfly Valley hosts over a hundred butterfly species each summer — though its steep walls mean the only easy way in is from the sea.
