Bodrum, Turkey

Bodrum is an Aegean coastal city in Turkey with roughly 180,000 residents, built on the site of ancient Halicarnassus, the birthplace of historian Herodotus around 484 BC. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, completed in 377 BC, was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World before earthquakes destroyed it between the 11th and 16th centuries. The Bodrum Castle, constructed by the Knights Hospitaller in 1402 on a 60,000 m² peninsula, now houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, displaying artifacts from the 1973 Uluburun shipwreck dated to 1305 BC. The 1774 Myndos Gate also survives from the original city walls.
