Lucerne, Switzerland

Lucerne is a Swiss city of roughly 83,000 residents that sits on Lake Lucerne where the Reuss River flows out. Its 204-meter Chapel Bridge, built in 1333, ranks as the oldest surviving wooden covered bridge in Europe and the world's oldest surviving truss bridge, with its 17th-century triangular paintings largely rebuilt after a 1993 fire. The Old Town Hall clock, dating to 1605, chimes one minute before all the other city clocks. The 1820 Lion Monument honors the Swiss Guards killed at the Tuileries in 1792, and the 1871 Mount Rigi railway became the first mountain cog railway in Europe.
