Palma de Mallorca sits on the southwest coast of Mallorca in Spain's Balearic Islands, where roughly 425,000 residents live in a city the Romans founded in 123 BC. The 1229 Cathedral of Santa Maria, built atop a former mosque, holds a rose window assembled from 1,236 pieces of stained glass, and Antoni Gaudí reworked its interior in 1904. Three kilometers west, the 1280 Bellver Castle ranks among the few circular Gothic castles surviving in Europe, while the 14th-century Royal Palace of La Almudaina faces the cathedral across the bay. Joan Miró also made the city his home from 1956 until his death in 1983.
