Košice, Slovakia
Košice is a city of roughly 240,000 residents in eastern Slovakia, set along the Hornád River. Hlavná ulica, the main street, holds the 14th-century Cathedral of Saint Elizabeth, the largest Gothic cathedral in Slovakia and the easternmost one of its kind in Europe. Nearby stand the 1908 State Theatre designed by the Viennese firm Fellner and Helmer and the 1503 Executioner's House, the oldest surviving civic building. The Singing Fountain, opened in 1986, plays in time with music every hour. Košice was also a European Capital of Culture in 2013, and its layered past still leaves questions worth walking through.
