Novi Sad, Serbia

Novi Sad sits on the banks of the Danube as the second-largest city in Serbia, home to roughly 280,000 residents and serving as the administrative capital of the Vojvodina region. Across the river, the 122-meter right-bank bluff is crowned by Petrovaradin Fortress, which was constructed between 1692 and 1780 and conceals some 16 kilometers of underground military tunnels arranged across four levels. The EXIT music festival has filled those ramparts each July since the year 2000. Back on the left bank, the Austro-Hungarian baroque core centers on Liberty Square, where the 1905 City Hall anchors the historic streetscape.
