Wrocław is Poland's fourth-largest city, with around 640,000 residents living on the Oder River in the southwest of the country. The city spreads across 12 islands linked by 130 bridges, while Ostrów Tumski, settled in 1244, holds the 14th-century Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist. The 13th-century Main Market Square covers 3.8 hectares and ranks among the largest medieval squares in Europe, and the 1955 Wrocław Fountain becomes a multimedia light show at dusk. More than 600 small bronze figures known as Wrocław dwarfs are tucked into corners across the city, and visitors rarely spot them all on the first try.
