Scheveningen, Netherlands

Scheveningen is a seaside district of roughly 70,000 residents within The Hague, sitting on the North Sea coast of the Netherlands and ranking as the most-visited beach resort in the Benelux. Its waterfront has been reshaped repeatedly, with the original 1901 Pier replaced in 2015 by a 400-meter angled-deck structure, while the 1875 red-painted lighthouse still marks the harbor mouth. Inland, the 1885 Kurhaus hotel, designed by German architects Johann Friedrich Henkenhaf and Friedrich Ebert, was the site of the Rolling Stones' riotous 1964 concert, and the 1439 Old Church anchors the former fishing village. During World War II, an anti-tank ditch of the Atlantic Wall was cut straight through the district in 1944. What survives beneath that layered coastline reveals a far older Scheveningen than most visitors expect.
