Haarlem, Netherlands

Haarlem is a Dutch city of roughly 165,000 residents on the Spaarne River, located about 20 kilometers west of Amsterdam, and it lent its name to New York's Harlem neighbourhood. The Grote Kerk, also called the Great or Saint Bavo Church, dates to 1348 and houses the 1738 Müller organ that both Handel and Mozart played. Painter Frans Hals lived here for his final 50 years, and the 1862 Frans Hals Museum now holds most of his works. The 1898 brick Ten Boom House at the corner of Barteljorisstraat concealed Jews during World War II, while the 1918 Vroom & Dreesmann building exemplifies Amsterdam School architecture.
