Eindhoven, Netherlands

Eindhoven sits in North Brabant along the Dommel river with roughly 248,000 residents, making it the fifth-largest city in the Netherlands. Gerard and Anton Philips opened a lamp factory here in 1891 that grew into a global electronics firm. The 1927 Philips Stadium hosts PSV Eindhoven, the football club the company founded. Saint Catherine's Church, dated to 1247, is the only central building surviving from before the Philips era. The 1956 Van Abbemuseum holds around 2,800 modern artworks, while the converted Strijp-S industrial site hosts Dutch Design Week each October.
