Vilnius, Lithuania

Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, sits on the Neris River with a population of about 580,000. Founded in 1323, the city preserves a UNESCO-listed Old Town covering 360 hectares and roughly 1,500 buildings, making it one of the largest surviving medieval cores in eastern Europe. On a 142-metre hill above the mouth of the Vilnelė River stand the 14th-century remains of Gediminas Tower, while the 18th-century Baroque Cathedral of Saint Stanislaus fronts Cathedral Square below. A 1783 plaque at the nearby Dawn Gate marks the boundary of what was once the largest Jewish quarter in Europe, hinting at deeper layers still embedded in these streets.
