Udine, Italy

Udine is a city of roughly 99,000 residents in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of northeastern Italy, governed by the Republic of Venice from 1420 to 1797. The 1517 Piazza della Libertà centres the city and features the Loggia del Lionello, a Venetian Gothic building modelled on Venice's Palazzo Ducale. A 1348 clock tower marks the historic core, while the hilltop castle built in 1517 houses the Civic Museums. Inside the Patriarchal Palace, the Tiepolo Galleries display 18th-century frescoes by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, painted between 1726 and 1732, and seasonal bora winds here can gust to 150 km/h.
