Padua, Italy

Padua is an ancient city in Italy's Veneto region, home to around 210,000 residents along the Bacchiglione River. Established according to tradition in 1183 BC, it houses the University of Padua, founded in 1222 where Galileo Galilei taught for 18 years. The Scrovegni Chapel contains Giotto's 1305 fresco cycle, widely recognized as a pivotal masterpiece of Western art, while the 13th-century Basilica of Saint Anthony features eight domes. Prato della Valle spans 90,000 square meters as one of Europe's largest elliptical plazas, encircled by a canal with 78 historic statues. Visitors walk beneath 25 kilometers of arcaded porticoes connecting medieval piazzas, outdoor markets, and historic Venetian cafes.
