Murano, Italy

Murano is a series of linked islands in the Venetian Lagoon in northern Italy, home to approximately 4,500 residents just 1.5 kilometres north of Venice. In 1291, the Venetian Republic ordered all glassmakers to move their furnaces to Murano to protect Venice from fire risks and guard glassmaking secrets. Key cultural landmarks include the Murano Glass Museum in Palazzo Giustinian and the 7th-century Basilica of Santi Maria e Donato, renowned for its Byzantine floor mosaics. Artisan workshops and glass blowing studios operate along the island's central canal quays. Travelers arrive by vaporetto water bus from Venice to watch glass-blowing demonstrations, cross historic footbridges, and shop for hand-blown glassware.
