Corfu, Greece

Corfu (Kerkyra) is the capital of the Ionian island of the same name, a town of roughly 40,000 residents on Greece's northwestern coast. The Old Fortress, a Byzantine-Venetian fortification built on a twin-peaked islet, guards the harbour at the foot of the town. Above it stands the New Fortress, constructed between 1576 and 1645 under Venetian rule. Between the two lies the Spianada, the UNESCO-listed Esplanade and the largest square in the Balkans. Its western edge is lined by the Liston, an arcade modelled on Paris's Rue de Rivoli in 1807, facing an active cricket pitch left from the period of British administration.
