Heraklion is the largest city and administrative capital of Crete, housing approximately 175,000 residents on the island's northern coast. Founded in 824 AD by Saracens and later expanded by Venetians as Candia, the city played a key strategic role in Mediterranean trade routes. The historic port is guarded by the 16th-century Venetian fortress of Koules, while massive stone defense walls surround the inner district. Just 5 kilometres south lies the ancient Palace of Knossos, complemented by the Heraklion Archaeological Museum's collection of Minoan artifacts.
