Nürnberg is the second-largest city in Bavaria with a population of approximately 520,000 residents along the Pegnitz River. Serving as an unofficial capital of the Holy Roman Empire during the Middle Ages, the city was a center for German Renaissance art and international trade. The medieval Old Town is enclosed by four kilometres of stone city walls and dominated by the sandstone Imperial Castle (Nürnberger Burg). Major landmarks include Saint Sebaldus Church, the Hauptmarkt square with its Gothic Beautiful Fountain, and the WWII Documentation Center at the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds.
