Naumburg, Germany

Naumburg sits on the Saale River in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, where roughly 33,000 residents live in a settlement first documented in 1012. UNESCO-listed Naumburg Cathedral, built between 1227 and 1248, houses twelve donor statues carved in 1249 by the Naumburg Master, with Uta von Ballenstedt remaining the most widely known figure. The 1608 Town Hall gained its Renaissance staircase in 1832, and four towers including the Marientor and Jakobstor still stand from the 1569 ring of medieval walls. Friedrich Nietzsche lived here from 1858 until 1895, and the 1897 Nietzsche Archive occupies the 1876 villa he once shared with his sister.
