Görlitz, Germany

Görlitz is the easternmost city in Germany, home to about 56,000 residents on the Neiße River at the Polish border, where it merges with its twin city of Zgorzelec. Roughly 4,000 listed buildings spanning Gothic to Art Nouveau make it Germany's largest intact historical Old Town, spared from wartime damage by the peaceful transition of 1989. The 1329 Peterskirche and the 1422 Dreifaltigkeitskirche face each other across the Untermarkt square, while the 1847 Viaduct was the first railway crossing of the Neiße. The 1250 Heiliges Grab reproduces the Jerusalem Holy Sepulchre at a 1:1.5 scale, and the layered skyline invites a closer look at what eight centuries of architecture left behind.
