Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a town of roughly 27,000 residents in the Wetterstein Alps of southern Germany, sitting about 90 kilometers south of Munich at elevations between 700 and 2,000 meters. The municipality was formed in 1935 by merging the two neighboring communities of Garmisch and Partenkirchen, and it went on to host the 1936 Winter Olympics. Nineteen kilometers to the south rises the 2,962-meter Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak, reached by a cable car built in 1930. New Year ski jumping at the 1921 Große Olympiaschanze draws around 30,000 spectators each winter.
