Fürth, Germany

Fürth sits in Bavaria on the Rednitz and Pegnitz rivers, roughly 7 km west of Nuremberg, with around 130,000 residents. First documented in 1007, the city launched the Bavarian Ludwig Railway in 1835, the first steam railway in Germany, running 6 km to Nuremberg. The 1820s Gustav-Adolf Church is the oldest Lutheran church in Bavaria, while the 1540 Israelitic cemetery holds 5,500 graves, the largest such burial ground in southern Germany. St. Michael's Church, dating to 1380, contains a wooden bell from 1490, and statesman Henry Kissinger was born here in 1923.
