Darmstadt, Germany

Darmstadt is a Hessian city of roughly 160,000 residents that has held the official title "City of Science" since 1997. Its Mathildenhöhe Artists' Colony, founded in 1901 and inscribed by UNESCO in 2021, contains the 1908 Russian Orthodox Chapel and the Wedding Tower designed by Joseph Maria Olbrich. A 1944 air raid destroyed about 80% of the city centre, yet later landmarks followed, including the Waldspirale apartment block by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, completed in 2000 with 1,000 windows, none alike. Since 2003 the city has also shared its name with darmstadtium, element 110, synthesized in laboratories nearby.
