Augsburg, Germany

Augsburg sits on the Lech and Wertach rivers in Bavaria, where roughly 300,000 residents live in Germany's third-largest Bavarian city. The Romans founded it in 15 BC as Augusta Vindelicorum, making it one of the oldest municipalities in the country. The 1555 religious accord signed here gave its name to the Peace of Augsburg, while the 1370 Fuggerei social housing complex still charges tenants 0.88 euros per year, a rate unchanged since 1521. The 1368 Cathedral preserves stained glass dating to 1140, the oldest such windows in the world.
