Lille, France

Lille sits on the Deûle River in northern France, roughly 15 km from the Belgian border, with about 233,000 residents. Founded in 853 around the Castle of Baudouin, the city holds a Grand'Place anchored by the 1845 Column of the Goddess and a 104-meter belfry completed in 1932 at the City Hall that earned UNESCO listing. A five-pointed star fortress designed by Vauban in 1667 still guards the perimeter, and Charles de Gaulle was born here in 1890. Named World Capital of Design in 2020, Lille layers a millennium of shifts within a short walk.
