Ústí nad Labem is a city of roughly 91,000 residents on the Elbe River at the western edge of the Bohemian Central Mountains. The 65-metre Gothic tower of the Church of the Virgin Mary's Assumption, dating from 1318, leans 1.96 metres off vertical after a 1422 gunpowder-store explosion. Střekov Castle, founded in 1316, sits on a 100-metre basalt cliff above the river, while the 1936 Mariánský bridge became the first self-anchored suspension bridge in continental Europe.
