Limassol, Cyprus

Limassol sits on Cyprus's south coast between the ancient ruins of Amathus and Kourion, and with roughly 235,000 residents it is the island's second-largest city and its largest port. The rebuilt 1590 Limassol Castle houses the medieval museum and is the spot where Richard the Lionheart is said to have married Berengaria of Navarre in 1191. The redeveloped Old Town marina sits beside the seafront, and the September wine festival draws on the surrounding Commandaria vineyards, which produce the oldest named wine still in commercial production. The same coastline holds a longer record that begins well before those marriages and vineyards.
