Larnaca, Cyprus

Larnaca is a city of roughly 85,000 people on the south coast of Cyprus, built on the site of Kition, a city-kingdom first established in the 13th century BC. The 9th-century Church of Saint Lazarus stands over the reputed tomb of the biblical Lazarus, a site of pilgrimage for centuries. Along McKenzie Beach, the Finikoudes promenade lines the waterfront with rows of palm trees. Inland, the Larnaca Salt Lake fills each winter, drawing thousands of greater flamingos, its waters mirroring the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque completed in 1816. The layering of Bronze Age foundations beneath these later monuments points to a longer story still being uncovered.
