Trogir, Croatia

Trogir is a walled islet of roughly 10,000 people set between the Croatian mainland and the island of Čiovo, founded by Greek colonists in the 3rd century BC. The entire historic core is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its continuous sequence of Hellenistic, Romanesque, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture. At its center stands the Cathedral of Saint Lawrence, built between the 13th and 16th centuries, whose 1240 portal by the sculptor Radovan frames the main doorway. Inside, the Chapel of Saint John was carved between 1468 and 1537 by Nikola Firentinac, while the 15th-century Kamerlengo Castle guards the seaward end of the islet. The layers beneath these stones reach back further still.
