Altenburg, Germany is a town located in the state of Thuringia. Tourist can visit from nearby Leipzig, Chemnitz or even Zwickau and Gera. Altenburg is known for its traditional playing card history. The Altenburg Castle, which we will visit on this tour, dates back to the 12th century. The castle houses a Playing Card Museum as card games like Skat, which is very popular in Germany, originated in Altenburg.

On this walking tour we start on Skatbrunnen before we get to the market square. Later we see St. Bartholomew’s Church, a Protestant church and many streets around to get a feel for this smaller German town. We explore the Altenburg center, get up to the Altenburg castle and eventually head back towards the train station at the end of our walking tour.
