Golden Sands is a major seaside resort town on the northern Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. Located some 17km north of Varna / Bulgaria the Golden Sands area (German: Goldstrand) is popular with German and eastern European tourists on affordable packaged holidays. The proximity to Varna makes it easily accessible by public transport. At this point in time (August 2022) many Ukrainian refugees are there as several hotels take part in the refugee program.
The history of the Golden Sands mass tourism area started in the middle of the 1950’s. Since then it has been continuously developed. Some (marketing?) legend has it that the name βGolden Sandsβ comes from an old story that tells of pirates who dug a huge stolen gold treasure in the ground which the land into sands.
We walk most of the busy area until Hotel Berlin near the marina late afternoon first. An endless stream of shops, beach bars and hotels on another side. Later near sunset (after swimming in the sea) we walk back to our starting point and uphill to an hotel area.
