Essen is the second-largest city of the Ruhr-area (after Dortmund), the largest urban area in Germany. Centrally located in the “Ruhrgebiet” of North Rhine-Westphalia Essen historically was a center of coal mining and steel production. Nowadays the Zollverein Coal Mine houses several museums.
On this tour we visit the city center of Essen. We start our tour after arriving at the train station and walk to Willy-Brandt-Platz. We see much of the city center with the Essen Minster (Essener Dom) and make it to the Essen City Hall, a modern highrise building via the “Rathaus Galerie” shopping mall.
From the eastern part of the city center we return to the inner city, see the Kreuzeskirche and more of the northern center with the Church of St. Gertrud.
We return again walking south via the many shopping streets of Essen towards the train station, where we end this tour.
